Norra

Terms of use and privacy policy.

Last updated 13 September 2026

The short version. Norra is a free, open-source macOS menu bar app that shows your own Volvo's battery, range and charging status. It is a personal, non-commercial project. There is no server, no account, and no analytics — your car's data goes from Volvo to your Mac and stops there.

What Norra is

Norra is a small macOS application that displays information about a Volvo car in the menu bar and in an optional desktop widget. It reads that information from Volvo Cars' official developer APIs, with your permission, and displays it. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to Volvo Car Corporation.

What data it accesses

When you sign in and grant consent, Norra requests only what it displays:

If you explicitly enable them, Norra can also send lock, unlock, honk and flash commands. These are off by default, and the permission to send them is only requested if you turn them on.

Where that data goes

Nowhere. Norra has no server and no backend. Your car's data is requested directly by the app running on your Mac, displayed, and kept only in memory and in a local file the widget reads. It is never transmitted to me or to any third party. There is no analytics, no telemetry, no crash reporting and no tracking of any kind.

Sign-in and credentials

Signing in happens in your own web browser, on Volvo's own domain, using OAuth 2.0 with PKCE. Norra never sees and never stores your Volvo ID password. What it does store is the refresh token Volvo issues, which is kept in the macOS Keychain on your machine.

You can revoke Norra's access at any time from your Volvo ID account, or by signing out in the app, which deletes the stored token.

Your responsibilities

Norra is provided free of charge and without warranty. Information shown in the app comes from Volvo's APIs and may be delayed, incomplete, or unavailable — a parked car can report figures that are hours old. Do not rely on it for anything safety-critical, and always confirm against the car itself.

If you enable the lock, unlock, honk and flash commands, you are responsible for how they are used. Only use them on a vehicle you own or are authorised to operate.

Liability

The software is provided "as is", without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including but not limited to the warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and noninfringement. In no event shall the author be liable for any claim, damages or other liability arising from, out of or in connection with the software or its use. This mirrors the MIT licence the source code is released under.

Changes

These terms may change as the app does. The date at the top reflects the most recent revision.
