macOS — menu bar app

Workhard
one switch for work mode.

Keeps the Mac awake with the lid closed, holds the display, sets Do Not Disturb, runs your Homey flows and remembers how your monitors are arranged. Also a workhard command for the terminal.

Download for macOS Source on GitHub Signed disk image, not yet notarized: on first launch, right-click the app and choose Open, or allow it under System Settings → Privacy & Security. macOS 14 or newer. The lid-close part installs a small helper you approve once in System Settings.
01 / What it does

Observed, not remembered.

Every row in the menu is read back from the Mac, so it shows what is true, not what was asked for.

  • Block sleep when the lid closesThrough a root helper that undoes it by itself if the app dies or the Mac reboots.
  • Keep the display awakeA power assertion, plus the display timeout set to never while the mode is on and restored after.
  • Do Not DisturbRuns a Shortcut you name on enter and another on exit, since Focus has no public API.
  • Homey ProTriggers one flow on enter and one on exit. Lights, Apple TV, whatever the flow does. Device rows in the menu are live and clickable.
  • Display profilesSave how the monitors sit at home and at the office. The right arrangement comes back by itself when that set of screens connects.
  • DriftSleep disabled while the mode is off? The menu says so and offers to fix it.
02 / Terminal

The command.

It talks to the app; the app decides; the helper obeys.

workhard # subshell with work mode on; exit restores
workhard on|off # flip it
workhard toggle
workhard status # what the machine is actually doing
workhard --json … # machine-readable
